Burwood Suburb Profile

Burwood, which also includes Burwood East, is a suburb that is about to have another exciting growth spurt; it will see approx. 2,000 new residents call the area home thanks to a major redevelopment of the former Burwood Brickworks that is underway. The development will house a new shopping centre and around 950 new homes, with a combination of high density and low density structures appealing to a wide range of demographics.

Housing

The area continues to grow in popularity, with many older homes making way for dual occupancy housing or groups of townhouses. Stylish apartment complexes are popular along main thoroughfares such as Burwood Highway; these are often seen as solid investments thanks to the highly sought after educational facilities in the immediate area.

Education

Many homes within Burwood are zoned to the tightly held Mount Waverley Secondary College and this can play a role in sales prices achieved within the area; Mount Scopus Memorial College and Presbyterian Ladies College cater for those seeking private schooling alternatives. One of the states most favoured tertiary education facilities, Deakin University, is also a prominent attraction and proximity to the campus can be a deciding factor for people looking to either buy or rent within the area.

Shopping and Dining

The infrastructure within the area is strong; there is the Burwood Hwy to City tram plus local buses that connect to trains on 2 different lines. Shopping is well catered for with Burwood One Coles and Kmart having 24 hour trade plus an Aldi and speciality shops, Burwood Heights shopping strip offers a Woolworths and smaller independent stores plus the strip shopping on the corner of Warrigal Road and Toorak Road offers a range of popular cafes and shops. The Tally Ho Business Park which houses many well-known corporations and organisations calls Burwood East home and there are a number of restaurants and cafes servicing those who work within this area.

Sports and Recreation

Burwood is also rich in recreational facilities for structured or casual sporting pursuits. Nunawading Basketball Stadium, Bill Sewart Athletics Track, East Burwood Reserve and Ballyshannassy Park rate highly as does Wattle Park with its golf course, fabulous playground and the chalet which is a popular venue for weddings and functions. Gardiners Creek is also a great place for locals to enjoy the outdoors with the trail branching out to surrounding suburbs.
