In 1871 Box Hill had a population of 154 and relied on orchards, vineyards and mixed farming. Fast forward to today, and you’ll find a major commercial centre and transport hub for the mid-eastern suburbs.

Housing

Whilst there are still beautiful period homes in the streets surrounding the centre of Box Hill, many standard properties are now making way for higher density developments. Recently the landscape went through a major change with the completion of the largest development outside Melbourne’s CBD; the 36 and 26 storey dual tower residential development and five-star hotel called Whitehorse Towers erected in the heart of Box Hill. Box Hill North and Box Hill South saw significant suburbanisation post World War II and today they still offer predominantly low-medium density living with many original homes being replaced with new, contemporary family homes or dual occupancy/small townhouse developments.

Culture

Box Hill is also notable for its diverse culture. It has a significant population of Asian residents, particularly Chinese. The diverse culture and range of dining options make it a destination that is favoured by locals and many from outside the immediate area.

Shopping

Shopping facilities are also favourable with Box Hill Central offering an array of variety stores, two supermarkets, and popular fresh food options. There is a range of retail stores including Asian grocers peppered amongst restaurants in the surrounding streets of Whitehorse Road, Station Street, and Carrington Road. Box Hill North and South also offer numerous smaller strip shopping precincts and Westfield Doncaster is easily accessible via Station Street and Tram Road.

Education and amenities

The infrastructure in Box Hill is a major drawcard. It houses the newly redeveloped Box Hill Hospital as well as Eastern Epworth plus an extensive number of medical and specialist suites. The transport links are superb with Box Hill’s interchange offering trains, trams and a large number of bus routes. Education is accessible with the tightly zoned Box Hill High School attracting families to the area, Our Lady of Sion College and Kingswood College providing private schooling options and Box Hill Institute offering a wide range of courses at differing levels. Hays International College offers a range of certificate and diploma courses predominantly to international students, again making Box Hill an attractive suburb for Asian nationals.

Parks and recreation

Sporting and leisure are also well catered for with facilities such as Box Hill Aqualink and Box Hill Golf Club servicing the surrounding area. Box Hill City Oval is home to the Box Hill Hawks who play in the Victorian Football League and also to the Box Hill Cricket Club. RHL Sparks Reserve, Surrey Park and Hagenauer Reserve also host a variety of sports and the Bushy Creek trail provides a place for locals to ride their bikes or walk, connecting at Elgar Road with Elgar Park and the Koonung Creek Trail.

Box Hill is a suburb with a diverse culture and a landscape that caters well to families, young couples, couples and singles through its diverse housing options and amenities.
